同伴健康教育工作者 Help Students Practice Mental 和 Physical Wellbeing

劳伦,25年3月

St和ing tall on the east edge of Scripps’ campus, the Sallie Tiernan Field House is at the center of the College’s commitment to health 和 wellness. Tiernan offers a holistic range of services to Scripps students, such as multi-purpose studios, 集团的健身课程, 一个游泳池, 和 a new student-designed wellness room. One of Tiernan’s most notable services is its 同伴健康教育工作者 program, developed by a group of student leaders committed to promoting mental 和 physical wellbeing.

“The 同伴健康教育工作者 are the faces of health 和 wellness advocacy on campus,” says Lisette De La Trinidad Alvarado, associate director of health 和 wellness. “For students to hear from a peer, 和 know that they are practicing these methods, is more impactful 和 resonates with students in a different way from the administration.”

The four 同伴健康教育工作者 each specialize in one dimension of wellness, including mental health 和 stress management, 营养, sexual 和 reproductive health, 或酒精, 烟草, 和 other drug use (ATOD).

As part of her initiatives focusing on mental health 和 stress management, Peer Health Educator 伊丽莎Kornfeld ’23 runs the weekly “Destress Thursdays” in which she highlights activities such as DIY body scrubs, 针织, 和 watercolor painting in step-by-step videos that students can follow. 在这些视频, Kornfeld also explains how the activity can lower stress 和 anxiety 和 elaborates on the scientific explanation in Tiernan’s weekly newsletter.

“从本质上来说, we’re turning scientifically proven ways to reduce stress into relaxing 和 fun activities,”Kornfeld说. “My hope is that students take time to rest 和 take care of themselves, 和 ‘Destress Thursday’ is the perfect way to do that.”

与此同时, ATOD Peer Health Educator 塞布丽娜代替 ’22 runs a podcast called “Intoxicating Conversations”, 上发现的 InstagramSpotify, where she hosts students 和 professors as guest speakers to discuss the different aspects of ATOD. Such topics include how cannabis can affect students’ academic performance 和 the party culture at Scripps.

Both Kornfeld 和 Lieu plan to roll out more in-person initiatives during the year, such as a Halloween-themed “Destress Thursday”’ 和 a Party Safe campaign to h和 out Halloween Party Kits of water, 零食, 和资源, 和 to promote protective behaviors 和 harm-reduction methods of high-risk drinking. In addition to allowing for more activities, Scripps’ transition back to campus from distanced learning also emphasizes the importance of mental 和 physical wellbeing now more than ever.

“When there’s so much going on with school 和 life, it’s really easy for me to let the needs of my mind slip to the very end of my to-do list,”代替说. “But I try to remind myself that my mental wellness means everything; none of what I do every day would be possible without it.”

Deb Gisvold, assistant dean 和 director of Tiernan Field House, echoes this sentiment.

“There are so many stressors that impact our daily lives 和 all of these things come to a head,”Gisvold说. “It’s really important to think 和 talk about mental health. [同伴健康教育工作者] help provide students with the ‘wrap-around’ care that they need—whether that takes form in meditation, 锻炼, or going outside—to cope 和 develop healthy behaviors for the future.”
